5 Great Tour Destinations that Won't Break the Bank

5 Great Rugby Touring Destinations (That won’t break the bank)

junior rugby tournaments

With the popularity of rugby growing all over the world, there are now very few places where you won’t be able to play games against good local opposition and have a fantastic time away from the pitch. We see rugby festivals popping up all over the place nowadays so we’ve outlined some of the many options below for you to consider when organising your next trip away with your team.

1. NETHERLANDS

Firstly, you will struggle to go anywhere in the world to find sporting facilities to match those in the Netherlands and, coupled with the famous Dutch hospitality that you’ll receive, you can understand why touring in Holland is growing in popularity.

Secondly, there are several rugby festivals that rival any to be found across Europe. One of those is the RC Hilversum Festival which takes place over the ever-popular Easter weekend. Teams travel from all over the world to take part across 11 different age groups and sample the unique atmosphere of this 1-day event.

The RC Hilversum Festival gives travelling groups the opportunity to situate themselves in nearby Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most exciting cities. With all that it has to offer you are guaranteed to have a great time away from the rugby field.

2. PORTUGAL

Despite being a relative minnow in world rugby, Portugal has some wonderful options for touring rugby teams of all ages including the Portugal Rugby Festival.

Taking place in the capital city of Lisbon, the event sees over 80 teams travel from as far afield as USA, South Africa and Canada. The organisers take care of everything (travel, accommodation, etc.) so you can just simply relax and enjoy the weekend knowing that all of your needs are catered for. Also, you are almost guaranteed warm weather during April in Portugal so it’s a great chance to soak up some sun while enjoying the rugby.

3. FRANCE

French rugby needs no introduction with its rich history and production line of top players, however it is also a wonderful (and cost-effective) touring destination for mini and junior clubs alike. The sport is hugely popular and junior level and a high standard of rugby is guaranteed, whichever part of the country you choose to situate yourself.

The Provins International Tournament is definitely one to consider if France is your preferred destination. Taking place just a short journey from Paris, the 2-day festival regularly attracts teams from around Europe including the German U16 national team! With a spectacular opening ceremony through the streets of the host town, and an organised BBQ/Disco on the Saturday evening, it really is a weekend to be remembered.

There are a number of travel options to suit any budget so there really is no reason not to consider a long-weekend in France for your next tour.

4. BELGIUM

Again, just a short journey across the channel, Belgium is another destination growing in popularity for touring rugby teams.

Junior rugby in Belgium can now boast a huge number of teams, and they are always willing to accept games with sides from the UK so you can be guaranteed a warm welcome from your hosts.

The country also boasts some fantastic tournaments, including the annual Ghent International Rugby Festival which will take place for the 30th time in 2018. The tournament attracts a large number of teams from the UK due to quality of the rugby on offer, and next year will be no different. The tournament organisers also offer an ‘all you can eat’ BBQ and Disco for competing teams, providing an opportumiTour – Rugby Festivalsnity to socialise with teams from across the rugby world.

As with all European tours we always advise to book early as they are notoriously popular and channel crossings can disappear very quickly if you’re not careful!

5. THE UK

Yes, we appreciate that this is an obvious one, but rugby festivals in this country offer a superb opportunity for teams to play competitive games but also enjoy their time as a group away from the field.
